Since no one has responded yet (3days), let us try to jump start it for you.
We have been custom on Amazon before Amazon had the custom program and we were involved in the beta custom program. We are a 100% custom business.
Since we do custom text items, it was a little bit of a challenge in setting up the templates in the beginning but became easy after the first couple of times.
We are not a mega seller but have been able to carve out our little spot and it has been relatively stable.
Probably the biggest challenge when it comes to custom is communication with the customer. Although the message system has a way for custom sellers, the buyers tend not to respond. So our suggestion to new custom sellers would be to remember to use both the detail page and the templates to convey any limitations that are common mistakes. This means that you might have to update both the detail page and template from time to time when you identify these common issues and provide instructions so as to help eliminate the issue.
We have been doing this for 25 years overall with 14 years of it on Amazon. If you do it right, you can develop some loyal customers. Be patient, be honest and be flexible.
