Shipping to Austria and Certain Countries
I've been selling online for several years. Most transactions have gone well. It always hurts when a sale falls through. The circumstances don't matter.
Every online seller should have to do at least one overseas shipment. Those can be challenging. Allow for extra time to fill out a customs form. Usually Amazon gives enough money for shipping. But that's not always the case.
It looks like one sale will fall through. The local post office had a list of certain countries. Shipping there is more challenging. Austria is on that sale. There is no book rate. This is also a heavy book. The amount for shipping was over twice what Amazon's allocation.
In addition, the customer would have to pay more money at the other end. I've already notified the customer. But most of my messages to previous customers got no response. So far the only money I've lost is the bubble mailer. I had the book packaged and ready to ship. There are very few sellers, if any, who could ship at such high rates.
Amazon really needs to improve their communication. We shouldn't have to jump through hoops to reach Seller Support. Give us a direct email and phone number. Revamp the metrics too. Don't penalize us for times when we have to cancel an order. My feedback has been good. One customer claimed to have not received an item. Delivery Confirmation said otherwise.
May all of you have a good Prime Day! My only request is that any responses be polite. That hasn't always been the case on this forum. Occasionally folks have asked me about selling online. One time I will tell them is that sometimes things go wrong. Thank God for all the times things go right.

There is no "book rate" for international -- Media Mail is only for domestic mail.
Not sure what you mean by "the customer would have to pay..." -- if you mean customs/import duties -- then this is indeed the case. When you offer on the dot com site, and allow international sales -- the buyer is responsible for customs / import duties or fees. This is explained to them if they take the trouble to look.
I would strongly urge you to not allow international sales on Amazon. High shipping costs is only a part of it. Think of Amazon's generous return policy -- do you really want to pay expensive shipping two ways just to get back to where you started?
